A National Public Radio (NPR) broadcast examining the economics of electric vehicle (EV) battery recycling has drawn analysis from automotive recycling industry representatives in Canada and the United States.
The segment, which aired July 13 on NPR’s All Things Considered, analyzed why the high concentration of valuable materials inside EV batteries does not consistently translate to positive salvage value for automotive recyclers. The report featured field insights from Thomas Andrade, co-owner of Everett Auto Parts in Brockton, Massachusetts, and Brian Bachand, CEO of Westover Salvage Yard in Belchertown, Massachusetts.
During the broadcast, Andrade noted that his facility surrendered multiple Chevrolet Volt batteries to a processing firm for zero net payout, avoiding disposal fees but generating no revenue. Bachand highlighted an operational Tesla battery pack listed for resale at US$1,200, noting that the sole recycling quote he received to dispose of the unit was a net expense of US$1,800.
Emil Nusbaum, vice-president of strategy, government, and regulatory affairs at the Automotive Recyclers Association (ARA), outlined the financial variables recyclers navigate when acquiring damaged or end-of-life EVs. A salvaged battery pack can follow multiple streams—resale as a replacement component, integration into secondary stationary energy storage, or direct chemical recycling—yet it can also incur thousands of dollars in management and logistics costs.
Commenting on the broadcast via social media, Steve Fletcher, former executive director of the Automotive Recyclers of Canada, stated the report accurately represented the structural challenges from the recycler’s operational perspective. Nick Nesbitt, CEO and founder of Ontario-based battery reuse firm Mapleview Energy, added that the data underscores the industrial deficit in facilities capable of diagnostics, testing, and repurposing prior to final shredding and recycling.
In a follow-up response on July 14, the ARA credited the broadcast with highlighting systemic recycling bottlenecks. Andrade serves as the association’s first vice-president and treasurer, and Bachand is a long-term member.
ARA staff indicated that these margin pressures could intensify as larger volumes of EVs enter the salvage stream, particularly due to the growing adoption of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistries. LFP batteries contain lower-value core minerals compared to nickel- or cobalt-based packs, frequently resulting in a net cost for recyclers to process.
To stabilize the recycling ecosystem, the ARA advocated for extended producer responsibility (EPR) regulations that shift end-of-life management burdens back to battery and vehicle manufacturers. The association also emphasized the operational necessity for recyclers to access standardized OEM data regarding a battery pack’s state of health (SOH) and state of charge (SOC). The organization cited recent Colorado legislation as a potential regulatory framework, which mandates that battery providers reclaim specified unwanted EV batteries to ensure compliance with reuse, repurposing, or recycling standards.
